    Discover the Art of Paper Folding and 3D Construction with International Paper Artist Kate Colin. This course will consist of structured tuition combined with allocated time for guided exploration and development of personal projects which could be lighting, sculpture or functional pieces.


    About this course:

    This course is suitable for anyone interested in three-dimensional geometric form and working with paper as a base material. Suitable for all levels, students will be introduced to the basic principles of paper folding and learn all the necessary skills and techniques required to create a range of three-dimensional structures. There will also be a brief presentation about the history of paper folding and a review of some of its numerous contemporary applications.

    Students will be encouraged to experiment, play with scale and use the gardens and landscape of Clos Mirabel as inspiration for form and colour. By the end of the week, all students will be equipped with the skills and confidence to fold independently and apply their newly acquired skills to their own practice.

    Programme Outline – Paper Folding and 3D Construction with Kate Colin:

    Saturday
    4.00 – Check in time at Atelier Clos Mirabel – settle in and explore the studio, Manor House, park and gardens
    6.30 – Welcome drinks
    7.00 – 4 course dinner in the Manor House or on the terrace

    Sunday
    8.30 – 9.30 Buffet breakfast of local and regional produce
    10.00 – 1.00 Introduction – study of folded samples followed by a short presentation on how folding can be applied to numerous materials and disciplines. Students will start to learn some basic folding techniques.
    1.00 – 2.00 Lunch at Clos Mirabel
    2.00 – 4.00 Continue with exploration of basic folding techniques and different weights and types of paper
    6.30 – Aperitifs before 4 course dinner in the Manor House or on the terrace

    Monday
    8.30 – 9.30 Buffet breakfast of local and regional produce
    10.00 – 1.00 A walk in the garden to draw/collect some folded and geometric forms occurring in nature followed by more learning new patterns and techniques
    1.00 – 2.00 Lunch at Atelier Clos Mirabel
    2.00 – 4.00 Begin to look at scale and make a few finished functional products.
    6.30 – Aperitifs before 4 course dinner in the Manor House or on the terrace

    Tuesday
    8.30 – 9.30 – Buffet breakfast of local and regional produce
    10.00 – 1.00 Adapting new techniques to larger scale projects and introduction to fabric folding using molds and steam.
    1.00 – 2.00 Lunch at Clos Mirabel
    2.00 – 4.00 Continue with the morning’s project under the individual guidance of tutor
    6.30 – Aperitifs before 4 course dinner in the Manor House or on the terrace

    Wednesday– day off (lunch not provided)
    8.30 – 9.30 Buffet breakfast of local and regional produce
    We suggest wine tasting in local vineyard, explore Pau or beyond
    6.30 – Aperitifs before 4 course dinner in the Manor House or on the terrace

    Thursday
    8.30 – 9.30 Buffet breakfast of local and regional produce
    10.00 – 1.00 Using skills and techniques already learnt, students will start to plan and create a larger scale final project
    1.00 – 2.00 Lunch at Clos Mirabel
    2.00 – 4.00 Continue with the morning’s project under the guidance of the tutor
    6.30 – Aperitifs before 4 course dinner in the Manor House or on the terrace

    Friday
    8.30 – 9.30 Buffet breakfast of local and regional produce
    10.00 – 1.00 Continuing work on larger scale project under the guidance of the tutor
    1.00 – 2.00 Lunch at Clos Mirabel
    2.00 – 4.00 Finishing individual work
    6.00 – Evening exhibition & drinks in the studio space of Atelier Clos Mirabel followed by 4 course farewell dinner in the Manor House

    Saturday – Buffet breakfast and departure
