Artist's Projects

Soyoung Sin is a Korean Botanical Artist and the President of Korea Botanical Arts Cooperative. She was born in Seoul and grew up in a house with lots of plants. After getting married, she lived in Gwacheon, a place with beautiful nature and as she became more interested in plants, she got involved with botanical art. Subsequently, she won a gold medal at the 2nd Botanical Art & Floral Arts exhibition held in Dublin, Ireland in 2014 and a silver medal at the RHS London Botanical Art Show in 2016. Together with her partner Jongbok Ahn, they established the Korea Botanical Arts Cooperative with outstanding artists from all over the country and work to promote botanical art by publishing botanical art books and holding exhibitions. In addition, Soyoung Sin lectures at Gachon University’s Global Future Education Institute and Yonsei University’s Future Education Institute, striving to foster future generations.

The focused botanical drawing of plants takes a long time to complete. It takes however much longer to research a plant before drawing it than it does to render it on paper. The charm of botanical art can be found here: the artist “chooses” and “researches” the plant for a long time, getting to know the subject inside and out. This research period can be as short as a few months or as long as a year.

It is important to emphasize that botanical art is not just an act of drawing, but an art of feeling nature. You need scrutinize with your eyes and expressing feelings through your fingertips. The patient process of capturing the detailed beauty of nature with your eyes, grasping emotions with your heart and transferring that onto the canvas is like having a dialogue with nature.

Another appealing aspect of botanical art is that it gives the artist a sense of calm and relaxation.
